Ever green midfielder Hillary Echesa of Chemelil Sugar has been crowned July Sportpesa Footballer of the Month owing to his splendid performance for the cane millers. The 30 year-old who traversed the world during his prime years seemed to be on his twilight days when he returned to the country.
His spirited performance in July, however, dumbfounded opponents as he inspired Chemelil to fore with virtuoso displays and three match winning goals. The veteran becomes a proud owner of the 43 inch LG television set which is synonymous with the players’ award since inception last year.
In addition, Echesa pockets Sh100000 for being the fifth recipient of the gong in 2016 with previous winners being Timothy Otieno of Posta Rangers, Sharif Mohamed of Bandari, Wycliffe Ochomo of Muhoroni Youth and Khalid Aucho, formerly of Gor Mahia.
The July contest pitted Eches with other remarkable performers in the frame of City Stars forward Ezekiel Odera, Ulinzi hit man John Makwata and AFC Leopards custodian Ian Otieno. Echesa, however, triumphed in a poll by football writers garnering twenty votes to pip his closest pursuer Odera who polled eleven. Otieno and Makwata respectively received ten and nine votes.
Echesa netted his side’s winning goal against AFC Leopards then secured a point for Chemelil deep in extra time as the millers held Tusker to a two-all draw. His other goal came in Chemeli’s victory over Sofapaka propping him among the most outstanding in July.
Chemelil Sugar coach Francis Baraza poured plaudits on his ageing forward saying Echesa’s effort has pulled the entire team a level up. “He has been very influential and carried the team along. When he’s on top of his game everyone steps up and we achieve good results and when he’s not having a good game you it affecting our entire unit. Such is his influence in this team.” Said Baraza
Echesa himself was humbled by the award and pledged to keep playing until he’s physically drained. “I’ll keep going until it becomes impossible for me to compete with the young boys physically. Right now I feel the same as I was years ago. I love playing football and I’m not exiting the scene anytime soon.” He chided
